The Periodontics training prepares the student for specialty membership examinations and provides the basis for continuing professional development after completion of the programme. The training includes didactic and clinical components. The student is required to complete one or more research projects and to be involved in clinical and didactic undergraduate teaching activities. RequirementsTo receive a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (D Ch Dent.) degree, the student is required to - Be in attendance in the programme for 36 months;
- Complete all courses and pass all course assessments;
- Demonstrate clinical proficiency in a range of periodontal/implant procedures;
- Participate in and assume responsibility for one or more research projects;
- Organize, write and present a thesis which should form the basis for one or more publishable papers
- Successfully defend the research in a viva voce examination.
If, at the end of 36 months, the student has not completed programme requirements, he/she has the option of registering for one (or more) terms(s) to finish the necessary requirements. Programme AimsThe aims of the programme are to train students to be: 1. Educated in the science of Periodontics, including contributions from the published periodontal literature, have an understanding of periodontal pathology, and understand the history and current rationale for clinical procedures in periodontics. To accomplish these aims, the students must fulfill the following objectives: a.attend and successfully complete course work which provides the basic background science which allows an understanding of the periodontal literature. b. attend and successfully complete course work which analyzes the periodontal and related literature pertaining to the anatomy, physiology, and cell biology of the health and disease. c. attend and successfully complete course work directed at analyzing, interpreting, and discussing the current periodontal literature recently published in refereed journals. d. attend and successfully complete course work relating to the scientific and clinical rationale, mechanics, placement, restoration, and pathology pertaining to dental implants. 2. Able to perform at a level of competency, the full range of clinical procedures which are considered essential to establish a specialty practice in the area of periodontics. To accomplish this goal, the students must: a. attend and successfully complete course work which relates to the direct treatment of patients. Perform prescribed periodontal /implant clinical procedures until judged to level of competency, defined as the ability to perform these procedures independently so as to achieve a successful clinical outcome.
